Frontex Plus won't help refugees either

The EU border protection agency Frontex has announced a new programme to help Italy with the task of rescuing refugees on the Mediterranean Sea. "Frontex Plus" will be launched in November, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström said on Wednesday in Brussels after a meeting with Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano. Yet another chapter in the story of Europe's failed refugee policy, the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera contends: "Alfano assures us that the human traffickers' boats will be destroyed. Unfortunately destroying ships that are already junk is the only concrete measure our interior minister announced after the meeting. ... Quite apart from the fact that these boats already sink on their own with no help from anyone else, sinking them won't help to stem the tremendous flood of migrants. ... Even if we destroyed a thousand a month, the traffickers would lack neither boats nor refugees desperate enough to risk the journey. Instead of trying to thwart the middlemen, the people who control them must be stopped - the traffickers themselves."

Italy must take care of its borders itself

Following the refugee disasters off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy is stepping up its surveillance operations in the Mediterranean. Prime Minister Enrico Letta discussed the final details of the 'mare nostrum' (our sea) operation with his ministers for defence, foreign affairs and domestic policy on Monday evening in Rome. The liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera welcomes the measure: "Lampedusa is not an autonomous republic but Italy's outpost in 'our sea'. As true as it may be that in the light of the Schengen Agreement the tide of refugees is a European problem, the fact remains that Lampedusa is our border and that we can hardly expect much more than sympathy from our EU partners. Italy must prove its credibility now. The operation must be effective and genuine. ... Our navy is doing an excellent job in the canal off Sicily's coast. So it's not about improving the image of the work being done here, it's about providing the funding that the navy has been demanding for years in order to bring about lasting change."

Italy capsizing in Costa Concordia trial

Eighteen months after the Costa Concordia disaster, prison sentences of between 18 and 34 months were handed out on Saturday to a shipping company representative and a crew member - on charges of manslaughter among other things. All that's missing now is for mitigating circumstances to be brought to bear for the captain, the left-conservative daily Corriere della Sera writes indignantly: "It's not just about mitigation and legal trickery here. Our image is at stake. The whole world is watching. 32 dead - and five of the six accused are being sent home with just a rap over the knuckles. ... The effect is all the more grotesque now that only the sixth accused remains: Captain Francesco Schettino who, with his obnoxious and reckless behaviour is an insult to all the mourners. He will not play the scapegoat. Because he is a caricature of Italy as a land of rogues. Since that cursed day of 13 January 2012 he has not showed the slightest hint of humility or contrition for his deeds, but has tried instead to pin the blame on others."
