European citizens' initiatives affect everyone

The European Citizens' Initiative for Media Pluralism is gathering signatures for a new legislative instrument aimed at protecting the freedom of the media. The web portal Protagon praises such actions: "This initiative also affects us Greeks. It demands that the European Commission put an end to press concentration and various censorship phenomena, not only in Berlusconi's Italy but also in other European states like Hungary, Germany and the UK. That is also Europe: citizens from various countries are calling for measures to be introduced and decisions to be taken, without being represented by politicians and without bureaucracy. ... Of course no problem can be solved just by gathering signatures. But we can at least show that we're interested and don't just spend our time looking apathetically up at those who decide our future without asking our opinion."
