Tusk takes weak opposition by surprise

Polish head of government Donald Tusk won a parliamentary vote of confidence on Wednesday by 237 votes to 203. The conservative prime minister proposed the vote in reaction to the Wprost scandal in a surprise move aimed at creating a stable situation ahead of the EU summit. A coup that has exposed the weakness of the opposition, the conservative daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna comments approvingly: "The government allowed itself to be listened in on for months. And the prime minister had to assume responsibility for this. That's why he took a gamble yesterday. ... And the opposition was once again caught unawares. It was completely unprepared; lacked any plan or ideas. ... And it was taken aback to see the prime minister suddenly making the rules. Tusk has stressed again and again in recent days that he won't be blackmailed by criminals. Yesterday he showed everyone that he will fight to the end."
