Ban on criticism in Sochi shows hypocrisy

The Winter Olympic Games in Sochi came to an end on Sunday without the Ukrainian athletes wearing black armbands at the closing ceremony because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had banned them from doing so. Pure hypocrisy, the daily Tages-Anzeiger writes: "The IOC officials shy away from clear words because for them everything about the Olympics is fantastic, because they couldn't care less, or because they simply lack the courage. Well that's their problem. But then they shouldn't go and announce, like IOC President Thomas Bach did, that 'We must not fight out conflicts on the backs of the athletes.' In fact the athletes are perfectly able to decide for themselves: their backs are generally broader than those of the officials. It's hard to shake the feeling that the IOC has hidden behind the ban on political statements stipulated in its charter just so as not to ruffle the feathers of powerful politicians and sponsors. Because billions are at stake - all for the good of sports, naturally."
