Portugal rejects election coverage censorship

Portugal's conservative ruling parties have reached a deal with the Socialists on a bill which, if it became law, would oblige media to coordinate their coverage of the run-up to the parliamentary election in October with a special committee. The purpose is purportedly to ensure that smaller parties are also covered in the media. In the eyes of the liberal business daily Diário Económico this is an attempt at censorship which is doomed to failure: "In the very week when Portugal celebrated the 41st anniversary of the Carnation Revolution that gave back the Portuguese their freedom, the political class disgraced itself when it became known that such a law was being drawn up. After the fierce rejection of the journalists and media companies, who in view of this blatant violation of the right to press freedom threatened to boycott the parliamentary vote, this proposed law will likely never be implemented. The parties have already distanced themselves from the bill and claimed that it wasn't completed."
