Alkinoos Ioannidis on how money is all-important for the Cpyriots

In a text published by the left-wing website among others, the well-known Cypriot singer-songwriter Alkinoos Ioannidis criticises the high status Cypriot society has accorded to money for some decades now: "We have taught our children to think about money, to serve money, to dream of money, to marry money, to give birth to money and to be money. … What will people base their lives on once the money runs out? … We have replaced our village festivals with parties in Greek bars, love with strip clubs, the bare necessities with a jeep full of useless purchases, our leisure time with overtime. We have forgotten what the most important components of our existence are, as individuals and as a society, and we have replaced them with the enchantment of things in shop windows. … The people of my generation and the previous generation have had no opportunity to conduct serious, substantial politics. Because they have dedicated themselves to consumption. … But these are the very people who, without guarantees, without logic, instinctively said 'no' [last week in parliament]. If only for a moment. A 'no' that was at the same time destructive and cathartic."
