La Stampa - Italy | 30/08/2012

Italy must reform its heavy industry

For the past three days around 100 miners have barricaded themselves underground with roughly 400 kilos of explosives in a coal mine on Sardinia in protest at the mine's planned closure. They are demanding a combination of coal mining and the housing of carbon emissions. Italy must listen to the miners, the liberal daily La Stampa admonishes: "The coal mine is a powder keg, but the ticking of the bomb comes as no surprise. … The problem affects not just Sardinia, but the future of Italy as an industrialised nation. Does the country want to maintain the production of industrial materials (chemicals, steel, paper, glass, aluminium) as a cornerstone of its economy or surrender its domestic conversion projects to the Chinese colossus? Energy-intensive heavy industry is granted special rates all over the world. Competitiveness must be guaranteed by capping energy costs. … Otherwise Italy will lose its heavy industry bit by bit."
