Africans victims of unprofitable Ebola research

The Ebola epidemic is spreading rapidly throughout West Africa and has now reached Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. It is down to economical factors that 40 years after the discovery of the virus there is still no medication against it, the left-liberal daily Aftonbladet suspects: "Ebola hasn't hit France, Denmark or Sweden yet but only the poor countries in Africa. This is why the sickness is seen as an isolated problem. ... To make developing a medicine profitable you need groups and states with money to spend. This is why research on hair loss and impotence - which is in demand in the West - is more worthwhile than research on Ebola. ... Now that Ebola threatens to make its way to Europe and the US, the medical research is likely to intensify. But it's by no means certain that people in Africa will benefit from the potential results."
