Political system limits Erdoğan's power

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan voiced his displeasure at the resignation of the head of the Turkish intelligence service Hakan Fidan on Sunday. Fidan stepped down last week with the approval of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu in order to run as a candidate for the ruling AKP party in the parliamentary elections in June. This internal party conflict is showing Erdoğan the limits of his power, the liberal online daily T24 comments: "This highlights the fact that there are developments in Ankara that he doesn't like and finds worrying. ... We should evaluate this climate in the context of Erdoğan's desire for a presidential system. He sees that with a constitution based on parliamentary powers even people who are as close to him [as Fidan] are beyond his control. ... The power Erdoğan seeks in the presidential system is not to be found in the current constitution, even if it is stretched to increase the powers of the head of state."
