Global perspectives: Lebanese covet Syrians' asylum in Europe

The infrastructure in Lebanon has all but collapsed under the weight of the roughly one million Syrian refugees in the country, the Lebanese paper L'Orient Le Jour writes, and observes a growing sense of envy among the Lebanese regarding Syrians who receive asylum in Europe: "Europe is ready to accept hundreds of thousands of migrants who collapse on its borders in search of asylum, caught between the innumerable dangers of the voyage and the wars that are devastating their country. 'Neither burned nor drowned nor lost on the way', goes an Arab saying that lists the worst types of death. The Syrians, to be sure, are the winners of this sad triathlon. Despite its tiny size, Lebanon holds the world record for refugees per capita. Its infrastructure has collapsed. ... Some of us are now starting to envy those wretched souls for whom the outlook is now brightening."
