Constitutional amendment discredits lawgivers

The constitutional amendment passed by the Hungarian parliament on Monday was the fourth since the new constitution came into effect in January 2012. For the conservative weekly Heti Válasz the government is damaging the credibility of Hungary's parliament. "The politicians of ruling party Fidesz have upset many Hungarian voters and harmed not only themselves in the process. ... If it was necessary for them to modify their work, which was supposedly written 'in stone', for the fourth time in two years, this undermines the credibility of the lawmakers. They degrade not just their own constitution but reaffirm the accusations of the opposition according to which it was the product of sloppy and poorly considered work. But far worse is  the fact that details have been written into the constitution that clearly reflect the interests of Fidesz."
